Annual procession of Gods and Goddeses in Hua Hin

On 16 April 2008 Advisory President Mr. Siriwut Phongphaiboon and Club President Mr. Nanthaphol Taolipo of the Naresdamri Beach Club Committee together with 10 of committees have organized the traditional, annual procession of God Somboon, Hua Hin Goddess and Tabtim Goddess as well as other deities on Naresdamri Road, near Hilton Hotel.

The procession has begun at 15.00 hrs. Members of club committees have prepared lotus flowers, candles and incense sticks for people. On the same occasion, the Sawang Phaisan Foundation from Pranburi has joined the procession and brought musicians playing various musical instruments and decorated vehicles.

All respectful Gods and Goddesses were paraded around Hua Hin City on a 3 kilometers long route. The Community Committee gave sets of lotus, candles and incense sticks to people on the street, in houses and restaurants. In return they have donated money to charities and have paid respect to their Gods. The donations this year were better than expected; the people were willing to donate 100 – 200 baht for a lotus flowers. Mr. Siriwut Phongphaiboon, the Advisory President said that all donations will go towards assisting the poor with education and some of money will be given to Abbot of the Phrabhat Namphu Temple Luang Po Alongkot to help with care of the AIDS patients leaving at the temple compound.

In the morning on 17 April 2008 the Naresdamri Beach Club Committee held Sand Stupa building competition in front of Tabtim Goddess Shrine. This competition is a local tradition passed from generation to generation over hundreds years. Hua Hin Municipality has prepared merit making ceremony but there weren't many participants but many people took part in the local ceremony. This indicates that the local people strongly adhere to their own traditions.

In this morning the Beach Committee brought food and desserts to offer to 19 invited monks who took part in prayers. After prayers 21 sand stupas on the beach in the vicinity of Hilton Hotel were judged and winners were selected. This competition made all participants to remember time when their ancestors took part in the same competitions. Now the present generation has preserved the tradition and it was nice to see so many foreigners taking part.
