Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat's Remembrance Day


On 08 December 2008 in the morning at Infantry Centre of Thanarat Camp Chief Commander of Infantry Centre Major General Nomit Meenayotin has arranged Remembrance Day of Field Marshall Sarit Thanarat's death. Among many guests were government officials, school teachers, members of Lion & Rotary Clubs. This year Major General Setha Thanarat who is son of Field Marshall Sarit Thanarat came to the Remembrance Day ceremony.

Major General Niwat Meenayotin and invited guests laid wreath at the statue of Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat. Then they went to visit museum where they looked at item brought by Field Marshal from his foreign trips.   

The Thai army officer and prime minister Sarit Thanarat (1908-1963) overthrew the government of Phibun Songkhram in 1957 and was responsible for initiating major programs of economic development and social welfare.

The revolutionary Sarit Thanarat's government moved quickly and with great force to execute positive policies of economic development and social reform and services. A commanding executive, he early gained a reputation for getting things done, as when he personally wielded an ax to smash opium dens and arrested arsonists.

Field Marshal Sarit Thanarat will be remembered for his effective policies of economic development, which brought the country rapid growth, for his strong promotion of education, especially in rural areas, and for the special attention he devoted to the impoverished northeast. He has died suddenly on Dec. 8, 1963.
