On Sunday 28 December 2008 at 2:15pm His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has attended the Long Boat Race Festival at Kao Tao reservoir. The previous evening, on the 27th December Vice Secretary General Has called Hua Hin Mayor and has informed him that the next day HM the King will come to Kao Tao watch the Long Boat races.
This was a complete surprise as neither the Governor or Hua Hin Mayor knew anything about it until that point. Immediately palace and government official have met and have discussed HM the King's visit to Kao Tao.
In the morning, on Sunday 28 December 2008, there were many military officers from army and navy, police officer and local government officials who came earlier to make sure that they are on time to welcome HM the King. Shortly before HM the King arrival security decided to stop food stall sell food as they thought that would be a security risk. Local food sellers didn't mind as they were very happy because HM the King was coming to Kao Tao. HM the King Bhumibol has arrived after 2pm and was accompanied by His Majesty's niece HRH Thapuying Tasnavalai Sornsongkram.
At that time Governor and Hua Hin Mayor were at the Long Boat Race Festival. Both of them have welcomed HM the King on his private visit to the Long Boat Race Festival. After warm welcome by the officials and Hua Hin residents present at the race, His Majesty stayed for about 90 minutes and has enjoyed the Long Boat Race competition until the last race.
On the second day about 20 thousand people arrived to watch the Long Boat Races. The winning team was presented with King's Cup.
